Jwompa Media
Project Summary
Designing the brand and mobile platform for a music discovery experience connecting the global diaspora to sounds from across Africa.

01
Strategy
African music has experienced a global surge in popularity, yet listeners in the diaspora often struggle to discover the full diversity of music across the continent. Most existing streaming platforms prioritize mainstream global genres, leaving African music fragmented and difficult to explore.
Jwompa was created to address this gap — building a platform dedicated to connecting audiences worldwide with music from all 54 African countries.
The strategic objective was to design a discovery experience that celebrates the richness of African music while remaining simple and approachable for both new listeners and longtime fans.
Key goals included:
- creating an inviting entry point for listeners discovering African music
- highlighting the diversity of genres, cultures, and countries across the continent
- designing a discovery experience distinct from traditional streaming platforms
- balancing curated exploration with simple navigation
The platform positions Jwompa as a gateway to the African soundscape, enabling users to explore music through curated experiences rather than overwhelming content catalogs.
02
Brand / Design
The Jwompa brand was designed to reflect the rhythm, vibrancy, and cultural richness of African music.
The identity combines bold color, dynamic illustration, and expressive typography to create a visual language that feels energetic and contemporary while celebrating African creativity.
The design system was developed to scale seamlessly across digital platforms, marketing materials, and in-app experiences.
The brand system includes:
- visual identity and logo system
- color and illustration framework
- typography hierarchy
- interface design language
- design system for mobile application components
This approach creates a cohesive visual environment that feels both playful and culturally authentic, reinforcing Jwompa's identity as a celebration of African music and culture.

03
Product Experience
Grayjoy designed and developed the Jwompa mobile experience with a strong focus on intuitive discovery.
User research and usability testing revealed that many listeners felt overwhelmed by traditional streaming interfaces that present thousands of songs without context. Instead, users preferred curated experiences that guide them toward new music in a more intentional way.
To address this, the product experience prioritizes curation over complexity.
The mobile interface focuses on:
- curated playlists highlighting genres and regions
- simplified navigation between countries and music styles
- visual storytelling that reflects the diversity of African culture
- an interface that minimizes friction in music discovery
Information architecture and user flows were carefully designed to guide listeners through a clear journey — from discovering new artists to exploring curated playlists and cultural themes.

04
Platform Evolution
Following the launch of the initial version, user feedback provided valuable insights into how listeners engaged with the platform.
Two key patterns emerged:
- users preferred a streamlined experience without overwhelming content choices
- listeners valued fresh and regularly updated music discovery
In response, the platform evolved to emphasize curated programming and simplified discovery.
Inspired by content-driven platforms such as Netflix and TikTok, the updated experience places curated playlists and music collections at the center of the interface. Users can quickly switch between genres, countries, and cultural themes through intuitive toggles, allowing exploration with just a few interactions.
The result is a music discovery platform that feels both guided and immersive, making it easier for listeners to explore the breadth of African music.

05
Result
Jwompa creates a dedicated space for discovering African music across cultures, genres, and countries.
Through thoughtful design, curation, and storytelling, the platform connects diaspora audiences with artists and sounds from across the continent.
The brand and mobile experience position Jwompa as a modern gateway to African music, celebrating the diversity of the continent while making discovery effortless for listeners around the world.
